Baby Canvases III: The Brats are Back Again!

December marked the 3rd year of Baby Canvases Art Show at the Soundry in Vienna, VA. This is my second year participating, and i was excited to see the new space the soundry has for viewing. All the paintings are 2" x 3" in size and all were marked for sale. So far some are sold and others are not, I will keep updated on which will be available after the viewings are over.

The turnout was amazing! I loved the crowd of people cooing over little artworks scattered all over. There were so many different art styles that there was something there for everyone to like. I purchased a few pieces by other artists because I couldn't resist!

Here is a quick digital painting for all to enjoy. I call it "Royal Flush"

I have been settling in to my new job as a Visual Designer at K12! I am also working with Lola's Laboratory, which is a kids camp for the arts.

So far I have gotten to make Flash illustrations for middle school science, 1st grade reader book covers, and I am working on a 2nd grade level childrens book about birds! I love that my work is being used to help children learn, it is very fulfilling!

I apologize for not posting in so long, once again. I really to want to get in the habit of posting every couple days. I think of something interesting to say but dont write it down...then I forget. Guess its time to change that habit!

What Inspires Me

I found a very neat thing called an Influence Map. It's for artists to show and really think about what has inspired them throughout their life. I want to share mine with all of you to better get to know me as an artist. Enjoy! If you want to make one yourself, I posted the link at the bottom.

Tinkerbell- she was the first character I was obsessed with drawing. I learned to draw by doodling tinkerbell and Sailor Moon over and over again.

Van Gogh- I have "Starry Night Over the Rhone" hanging in my bedroom and have had it there growing up. It has always inspired me in a way that is hard to describe.

Precious Moments- I used to fill up coloring books of these cute creatures. My great grandmother got me the birthyears set from infant to twelve that I still own and hold dear to my heart.

Sailor Moon- Like many girls, me and some old girlfriends would get together and watch the show almost every day. I loved the girls so i practiced my drawing skills sketching them.

Disney Classics- Growing up I watched a ton of cartoons, and I loved Disney. I know a lot about the company's history and find it interesting, too! So it's not just the characters, just Disney as a whole. Disney pre-2000.

Devita Stipek Writer-I discovered her work while on the cruise ship Carnival Valor. Her murals were on the walls everywhere. Georgeous landscapes using bright colors and broad brush strokes. I find it very appealing to the mind and the eye.

Lisa Frank- The colors attracted me, of course. I liked to collect Lsa Frank stuff as a little girl. Perhaps that is one reason I love extensive (but properly done) use of color.

Tex Avery- I love Red Hot Riding Hood, and Droopy Dog was such a little player! As a kid, I liked the cartoons of retold fairy tales.

Alphonse Mucha- Art Nouveau at its best. I learned a lot about anatomy, detail and texture from just looking at his work.

Garette Johnson- I met Garette a couple years ago at Gigacon. She is a professional fashion illustrator living in New York and I was just a student at the time. I have watched her painting demos at Gigacon and they are both inspirational and full of helpful knowledge for me. I learned a lot from her and I love her work. She is a very cool woman who is passionate at what she does, and I have a lot of respect for that.

Francesca Lia Block- A writer but an artist in her own mind. My absolute favorite author! I won most all of her books. I like her use of imagery and the way she writes is so different from anyone else! From her website: "Author Francesca Lia Block is renowned for her groundbreaking novels and stories—postmodern, magic-realist tales that transport readers through the harsh, gritty landscapes of contemporary life to transcendent realms of the senses where love is always our saving grace."

Anneli Olander- She is my favorite living artist. I respect her ambition and talent. I like the way the she paints, thinks, and lives her life.

Fafi- She inspires me because she is young, ambitious, and succussful. I want to be more like her, but still be me....fritchie! She is a french graffiti artist and I just love the fact her work is painted on on all sorts of things and places.

Michael Turner- He was the first comic artist that I truly loved the way he drew. The faces, especially. Not only that, it wasn't the normal superhero comics all the boys read. It was something different, Aspen Comics gave me something more.

Edwin Georgi- Probably my favorite painter of all time. He uses his brush much like Van Gogh did but his color use was brighter. He was a less-depressed person and his women seem flawless like goddesses

Ralph Bakshi- I love that he wasnt afraid to push boundaries and create the first x-rated cartoon. I also like the character "Holli Would"

Gil Elvgren- the greatest american pin up artist. I love pin up girls, and I think just as many girls like them as boys do. His anatomy is spot on and I love the innocent sexy look.

Not Shown:
fashion- As a woman and an artist i can never get enough of fashion. Fashion magazines can be the best reference and inspiration sometimes. I like both vintage and up-to-date magazines including Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper's Bazaar

art nouveau- "An artist should work on everything from architecture to furniture design so that art would become a part of everyday life. By making beauty and harmony a part of everyday life, artists make people's lives better." I believe this 100%.

vintage/antiques- I love old things, they have a story of their own. Vintage can be very classy and intriguing.

Although 2010 was a wonderful year for me, I am greatly looking forward to what is in store for me this year. I have a job interview later this week with the company k12 as a visual designer. k12 is an online school, you can learn all about them at their site: k12.com
This is a great opportunity with a prestigious company, so I am very appreciative of such good luck in the new year!

The AIW Portfolio Show was on December 15, 2010. I now have my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Media Arts & Animation!

Doodle Dump!

I am proud to announce that I am now a graduating senior at the Art Institute of Washington! I will be graduating on December 15, so I have been busy getting together all that I need. On the day of my graduation, there will be a portfolio show for all the graduating students where we have a chance to showcase our work. I am working on a booth with an art nouveau 1920ish theme. The main effort is building a wall, adding wallpaper, and adding the wood paneling/moulding. I will share pictures once the wall is built!

I would share some of my portfolio work, but I think it is best to wait to show all my fine work on my real website. It is a requirement i have one by graduation so it wont be long before I have a gorgeous gallery for all to enjoy.

I will be nice and share some of my favorite doodles from the couple weeks.

Baby Canvases II Art Show this Saturday!

This saturday there will be an art show at an awesome place called the Soundry in Vienna, Va. I will have ten paintings at the show, and nine will be for sale! There will be a bunch of other artists there so I know it will be a good time. Anyone is welcome to come, and it is free to get in. So far the paintings I seen looked awesome, especially since they are on such small canvases! Remember, these are only 2"x3" each. I seen prices range from $15-$30 for others, I will have mine available at the show for $15 and $20 depending on the painting.

And lucky for you, and paintings not sold at the show will be available online afterwards. But if you purchase at the show it will be slighty cheaper.

First Art Show! Baby Canvases...

I am really looking forward to being a part of an art show for the first time as a professional artist. The show is called "Baby Canvases II: The Brats are Back!" and it will be held at the Soundry in Vienna, VA. All the paintings from the show are limited to 2" x 3" canvases, so it will be challenging for the artists and interesting for everyone. The show starts June 26th, 2010 at 7pm!

I will have 12 paintings for sale at the show. They will be portraits, but NOT done in a realistic style. They will each have a small story behind them as well, almost like a little nursery rhyme or silly poem. Paintings will be around $50, and will be One of a Kind and signed by me. Any painting not sold at the show I will have for sale online.

I will have pics of my mini paintings once I get some finished.

Lilly Lashes

Lilly Lashes is a little girl I created a little while ago in my Children's Book Illustration class. I have found myself drawing and painting her a lot since she is basically a pretty little girl with wavy blonde hair who gets to dress up in fancy dresses and outfits of buttons, lace, silf, feathers, and the like. She is always in "La La Land" and couldn't imagine life without her amplified imagination.

Bird is the Word

I know someone who says "the bird is the word" sometimes and I know it is an older saying. I took a liking to it and inspired me to make the illustration above. Watercolors in Corel Sketchpad.

Okay, so after looking at my animation over and over, I decided I want to tweak one small part before putting it online. So you will have to wait a few more days, a week max. I need to get a logo design done for a client as well as a hand painted bear for another.

I painted my mom a picture using real watercolors on Mothers Day, it made me and mom feel good.

In other news, I have been working on my website majorly! It is looking good so far, I almost can't wait until it gets up and running. I am getting all my favorite works together and trying to create new ones for the gallery. If you dont know, my site will be very animated! It is going to look something like the inside of the store Bonnie & Jinx comes from, JuJu Joys. The loading screen will be Bonnie & Jinx in a little slapfight....

Also, I finished a Bonnie & Jinx short! I am fixing small things i think i can improve and it will be online in the next day or so!

Letter Challenge

I have been spending a lot of time working on my website and it has come to my attention that i really want more work to show. I am in the mood to create, and create I shall! I want to have a direction to go in while i am sketching, so I am going to make a sketch/illustration for each letter of the alphabet. Im not going in any particular order, and I'm not going to tell you what I'm going to illustrate for each letter. I'm giving myself until the end of may to finish each letter!

I have also recently created a youtube account for my animations and a zazzle account for future merchandise! And last but not least, I have bought my domain name and hosting at fritchieart.com ! The website will be up within the next two months!

So the drawing about is my first ever creation with Corel Painter 11. I didn't use any previous versions, but i like what i came across so far although it is very different from Adobe!
